Abstract

Hosted & Facilitated by: Ahlia Griffiths

Target Audience: This interactive workshop is best suited to practitioners, policy makers, post graduate students, researchers and industry partners. We will provide practical strategies on how to strengthen working with Lived Experience Experts (LEEs) / end users in practice development, delivery and implementation.

Learning Outcomes:
1.Apply an equity lens when engaging Lived Experience Experts
2. Explain the significance of community engagement as well as the integration of lived experience in health and medical research
3. Identify biases and barriers that may influence consumer engagement and participation.
4. Apply strength-based, inclusive, and practical strategies to effectively engage individuals with lived experience.

Workshop Summary:
Developed in 2024 to equitably include the voice of Lived Experience Experts (LEEs) the VILLAGE – Valued Individuals Living and Learning About Growing Equity was created to embed community defined and non-traditional forms of evidence into research and practice. The involvement of Lived Experience is no longer an optional add on, it is a rich source of evidence, and a safeguard against repeating harm.

This workshop will support you to move from the WHY we need to include this practice and into the HOW this work can be safely and meaningfully done. Written and facilitated by LEEs we will explore how lived experience strengthens the relevance, quality and real-world impact of your work. The workshop introduces key concepts and methods for engaging lived experience.

This learning provides an important foundation for those seeking to enhance impact and lead the way in co-designed, community-informed research practice. This workshop introduces participants to the practical skills needed to meaningfully embed lived experience, moving beyond consultation toward genuine partnership and shared decision making.

We can’t achieve equity without including those our decisions will most likely impact.

When we say ‘Lived Experience Experts (LEEs)’ we are referring to the expertise gained through a direct and personal experience of a specific issue or system. We understand you may know this work as consumer and community involvement, patient and public involvement, patient-centred research, or something else altogether.
