Workshop: Co-design for digital health, AI, and emerging technologies
Abstract
Hosted by: Deakin University Institute for Health Transformation and Monash University Action Lab
Facilitated by: Jessica Watterson, Ling Wu, and Jo Szczepanska
Target Audience: Public health researchers, practitioners, and students
Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the benefits of co-design to improve digital health, AI, and emerging technologies
2. Compare levels of community engagement in co-design approaches
2. Plan relevant co-design methods for real-world projects
Workshop Summary:
This interactive 90-minute workshop introduces co-design approaches for digital health, AI, and emerging technology, with the ultimate goal of creating more equitable, acceptable and effective digital health innovations. Through real-world examples, the workshop will demonstrate the value of engaging community members and stakeholders across the project lifecycle. Participants will discuss who to involve, why their perspectives matter, and how to meaningfully engage them while considering project goals, constraints, and ethical considerations. The session will showcase a range of engagement methods, highlighting how community members can contribute to problem definition, design, implementation, and evaluation. Facilitated activities will allow participants to apply co-design principles to their own projects, supporting translation from theory to practice. The facilitators will draw on their extensive experience in co-design, human-centred design, and digital health to share practical lessons, common challenges, and strategies for success. Participants will leave with actionable tools, frameworks, and resources to support ongoing application of co-design in their work.
This workshop is suitable for public health researchers, practitioners, and policymakers seeking to strengthen their skills in participatory approaches in digital health innovation.
