Australia led the world in driving the first switch of the world’s salt supply from regular salt to iodised salt, saving millions of the most disadvantaged from goitre and lifelong neurological deficits. With the next switch from iodised salt to iodised and potassium-enriched salt, we will protect billions more from stroke, heart attack and premature death. While the evidence base for transitioning the world's salt supply is strong there are complex barriers spanning governments, industry, multilaterals and consumers. Navigating this complex environment will require a multidisciplinary approach, global collaboration, enthusiasts and perseverance.
