Workshop details

It has famously been said that there can be no health without mental health. With the recent inclusion of “Promoting and protecting mental health” as a priority in the new National Preventive Health Strategy, it is therefore important that people working in the field of health promotion and/or public health are familiar with the key concepts and issues that relate to mental health promotion, so that they can contribute effectively to efforts to promote mental wellbeing and prevent the onset of mental health conditions like depression and anxiety disorders.  This workshop will introduce health promotion practitioners to the specialist field of mental health promotion, and will explore the unique issues and evidence base of this key branch of health promotion practice.

Participants will gain knowledge in the following areas:

•              What is mental health promotion and what are its similarities and differences to health promotion?

•              What is mental wellbeing, what is mental ill-health, what is the mental health continuum?

•              What works to promote mental wellbeing?

•              What works to prevent mental health conditions?

•              What’s happening on the ground right now, and what else is needed?
